CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS
APRIL
  • HANAMATSURI: Sunday 4/7, 9am – noon. This our “Flower Festival” celebration of the birth of the baby Buddha. As we do zazen we will hear of the his auspicious birth. Tbis is followed by a ceremony where we offer flowers and sweet tea
  • ANNUAL MEETING: Sunday 4/14, 9am zazen. 9:30 – 11:30 meeting. This is an important meeting where we will, among other things, select new Board of Director members.
  • ORIENTATION TO PRACTICE: Saturday 4/20, 9am – noon. See the Orientation to Practice page for details and how to register.
  • QUESTION AND RESPONSE: Wednesday 4/24, 7-9pm. Three rounds of zazen and dokusan replacing the last round with a chance to ask our teachers any questions you choose.
  • FOUNDATIONS OF ZEN PRACTICE SERIES 1, CLASS 1: Thursday 4/25 7-9 pm. Four Noble Truths, Eight-fold Path This is the first of three classes that will be held on the consecutive Thursdays of 4/25, 5/2, 5/9. 
  • ZOOM DHARMA TALK: Saturday 4/27. 9:30am HST zazen followed by  a Dharma Talk by Michael Kieran at 10am. This is an event that is especially for those practicing from afar.
  • SAMU SUNDAY: Sunday 4/28, 9am – noon. A round of zazen then 2 hours of Samu (work practice) ending with a closing ceremony and lunch.
MAY
  • FOUNDATIONS OF ZEN PRACTICE SERIES 1, CLASS 2: Thursday 5/2 7-9 pm. Conditioned origination, Impermanence, No Self.
  • FOUNDATIONS OF ZEN PRACTICE SERIES 1, CLASS 3: Thursday 5/9 7-9 pm. Classical Chinese world view and its  connection to our practice.
  • HELE MALIE SESSHIN: Hiking sesshin Sunday 5/13 – 5/17. This sesshin takes place in the wilderness on the Big Island (Hawai’i).
  • ORIENTATION TO PRACTICE: Saturday 5/18, 9am – noon. See the Orientation to Practice page for details and how to register.
  • HIKING ZAZENKAI: Sunday, 5/19, 9 am to 4 pm. Trailhead TBA. We do a round of seated zazen at the trailhead and then silent hiking kinhin till lunch. A reading and discussion at lunch then silent kinhin to return.

If you have not sat zazen with us before, we ask that you first attend an Orientation to Practice. (click here for details) For those with significant experience sitting zazen elsewhere we can arrange a short mini-orientation to our forms prior to a sitting.

Please note that morning zazen is not listed on the calendar itself as the sitting times can vary occasionally to accommodate the work/school schedule of the residents. Currently we are sitting from 5:30 – 6:30am Monday – Friday.
