CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS
DECEMBER
- FOUNDATIONS OF PRACTICE CLASS 2: Thursday 12/5, 7 – 9 pm. Second class in the series on a foundational aspect of Zen Buddhism and its’ practice.
- ZAZENKAI: Sunday 12/8, 8:30 am – 4 pm. This is our annual Bodhi Day zaazenkai in which we celebrate Shakyamuni’s enlightenment with a day of zazen with dokusan in the morning and afternoon. There is a Dharma Talk/Assembly in the afternoon. You may come to any part or all of this. Bring your own vegetarian lunch.
- FOUNDATIONS OF PRACTICE CLASS 3: Thursday 12/12, 7 – 9 pm. The final class in the series on a foundational aspect of Zen Buddhism and its’ practice.
- QUESTION AND RESPONSE: Wednesday 12/18, 7-9pm. Three rounds of zazen and dokusan replacing the last round with a chance to ask our teachers any question. Nothing is off-limits.
- ORIENTATION TO PRACTICE: Saturday 12/21, 9am – noon. See the Orientation to Practice page for details and how to register.
- ZOOM DHARMA TALK, Q&R: Saturday 12/21, 9 am – Zazen, 9:30 am Dharma Talk by our teacher Kathy Ratliffe. This is a monthly zoom organized by sangha who are off island.
- SAMU SUNDAY: Sunday 12/29, 9am – noon. A round of zazen then 2 hours of Samu (work practice) ending with a closing ceremony and lunch.
- NEW YEARS EVE ZAZEN: Tuesday 12/31, 7 pm – midnight. For those who choose to bring in the new year quietly. Sitting is informal and you may come and go as you please.
JANUARY
- ROHATSU SESSHIN (8 DAYS): Gather Thursday evening 1/2 for sesshin 1/3-10. This is one of the more rigorous sesshin of the year and honors Buddha’s enlightenment.
- ORIENTATION TO PRACTICE: Saturday 1/18, 9am – noon. See the Orientation to Practice page for details and how to register.
- WINTER SANGHA MEETING: Sunday 1/19, 9-11 am zazen and meeting.
- ZOOM TALK: Saturday 1/25, 9am zazen followed by a talk by Clark Ratliffe. This is for members and friends who live off island and are unable to attend in person.

If you have not sat zazen with us before, we ask that you first attend an Orientation to Practice. (click here for details) For those with significant experience practicing Zen elsewhere we can arrange a short mini-orientation to our forms prior to a sitting.

Resident led zazen: Participants in our Residential Program (click here for details) lead less formal (bells only) early morning and evening zazen. These don’t appear in the body of the calendar because the times occasionally change depending on residents school/work schedules.
- 6 – 7 am Monday – Friday
- 7 – 8 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
- You are welcome to join the residents at any time.
